We Are Made of Us is about family dynamics, facing inherited trauma, and reconnecting to our motherland. It’s part memoir, part guide, part hospital stories from my decade of chaplaincy.
At the bedside of deathbeds, severe trauma, and end-of-life decisions at a level 1 trauma center, I was witness to thousands of rooms with complicated family dynamics. I entered a hyper-microcosm of family secrets and grudges and unspoken pain rushing to the surface at warp speed.
My book is part memoir, part guide, and part hospital stories from eleven years as a chaplain in a level 1 trauma center.
Having visited thousands of patients and their families, I saw how wrong I was about ideas of “being family” as I
- witnessed family dynamics at warp speed in crisis,
- the myriad ways that family of origin had imprinted on patients as they lay dying,
- when I witnessed deathbeds where patients tried to reconcile with their estranged loved ones and their own buried history,
- when I saw how political and doctrinal definitions of “family values” threatened to divide us from our global human family.
What we inherit from our own family and its definitions has a way of determining how we move in the world, and more, how it can be changed.
